Well I was browsing the Rifftrax Blog” when Bill (Crow in the last seasons of MST3K) posted a video to Buffalax of foriegn songs he wrote subtitles. Without further ado, I present Crazy Indian Video!
Well Sunday was a total write off for me, so really nothing got done. Just an attempt at a design for a site that was terrible. Chapter 1 page 2 never happened, again I blame Steve.
But how about we all cheer up with some Chevy Chase!
Yep, it’s Friday and I’m pretty tapped out so I surrender on the snark post titles. It’s time for FRIDAY SLACKER LISTS!!!!! Yatta! I’ve got inexplicably happy music for you all.
If that doesn’t start your weekend off on the frenetically tapping right foot, I dare you to not get cheered up by Chatmonchy’s new single “Tobiuo no Butterfly.” This is weapons-grade liquid cuteness we’re dealing with folks; we’ve got to evacuate the area before we smile ourselves to death.
Also this has nothing to do with anything, but Haruhi Wright rules. I was actually proud when I placed this instantly the first time I watched the show, as I’m a rabid fan of both. Giant. Nerd.
On other fronts pitchfork fest is sold out, so if you dawdled this long you are thoroughly SOL. I’m guessing this includes several people I know.
Ahhh smokey, weekday 1am shows… how do I attempt to recover from thee? Let me count the ways. Anyhow, I rather enjoyed discovering Nicole Atkins & The Sea. Lovable music, and winningly enthusiastic in a way that cuts through all the concentrated hipster posing at the venue. At least it did for me (doesn’t hurt that she’s adorable, even my sister thought so).
Anyhow, I’m tired. I need to get motivated. With the best motivation poster collection I’ve seen yet. Lolcats!! Some blogs cry out for links, attempting to right the fark-like injustice of the world, so I’d recommend swinging by random kitty sometime. Little duckies 4ever.
I’ve started to apply the whip to the various factions that comprise my friends, to some limited success. The floggings will continue until ticket sales improve, people! Repeat ditchers will be keel-hauled before the entire crew as an object lesson to those who would dare dodge awesomeness. Personally, I can’t imagine a better time than hanging out in the sun, listening to 40ish fantastic acts. I can truthfully say that this year… the last two years were great but the lineup this year is extraordinary.
Not really a pitchfork kind of listener? Then amuse yourself with David Cross’ take on pitchfork reviews. As a long-time pitchfork reader and a fan of Cross, this is about as good as it gets. “Overwrought” is the perfect word. I love them both the same… THE SAME.
Anyhow, hopefully more folks will find the time to jaunte down to Chicawgo.
New Gundam Show! Screw Neon Genesis, I like my angsty robot teen warrior with a bit more pop flair. Plus, in Gundam Wing that one kid threatened to kill a girl that invited him to her birthday party. At that anime age, I think it means he likes her despite her cooties.
As long as I’m being a pop japanophile spaz, I fully agree with tvinjapan’s hyping of this video by the double+ awesomely named band Plus-Tech Squeeze Box. It’s like Shibuya-kei on crack. Good stuff!
Also on point is Japanator with this great clip of the girl from the Polysics videos showing a motley crew of tv show celebs how to pull of her moves. Hard Gay is hilarious as always… he and Matsumoto put a lot of our comics to shame.
Today started off sucking without reservation, but a little bit of sun and a good kefta sangwich have sorted me right out. Bring on the afternoon!
Do you know what makes Tuesday a special day of the week? If you don’t know the answer, listen to more music. You’ll figure it out eventually.
This will make for a weird music post, but it’s hard to separate the mixture of things I’ve been seeing over the last week:
The New Pornographers first single My Rights Versus Yours off the so-close-to-out-it-hurts album “Challengers” is a great sign of what’s to come.
Along the same lines, the new Lauryn Hill track Lose Myself shows some promise. I just wish that booming production would just back off and let her take center stage, because she’s still sounding great. This track SCREAMS remix. Well, what can you expect for something off an animated feature soundtrack?
Actually, sometimes you can expect quite a bit: Yoko Kanno is my favorite anime soundtrack composer, and the soundtrack she did for the Cowboy Bebop was fantastic. Here is some footage of the The Seatbelts performing it live which absolutely burns through this stuff. Wow. Yoko’s enthusiasm quickly overcomes the “wtf” factor of that amazing red coat even without the music.
Usually, I hate it when sappy TV shows try to initiate some kind of fake hugfest around personal tragedies and disabilities, but Brian Gaynor blows away anything a scheming TV producer could dream up with this great dance number. I think it’s fantastic how he transforms his limited range of motion into a great personal style. Bravo!
Neutral Milk Hotel’s “In An Aeroplane Over The Sea” is probably my favorite album of all time. This photo montage of Anne Frank set to it is particularly powerful (warning: there’s nothing horrifically graphic but there are a few holocaust pictures included). Like the music, the effect is overall manically positive despite all odds.
Overall, the only entirely intrumental music I like lives in jazz, classical, or ambient territory. So I have mixed feelings about hearing over at monkeysforhelping that the new beasties album “The Mix Up” will be entirely intrumental. One can only hope that the remix cd, featuring names like M.I.A. and Mark Ronson will salvage the project into something I’m more interested in, like the second coming of the Root Down EP. Yeaaaaaaah Boiiiiii… ahem.
Along the same lines, I can’t help but feel dissapointed by the new Battles release. I was really psyched after hearing the single “Atlas” but I can’t shake the feeling that aside from a few standout tracks, it’s like imagining an alternate reality where Tortoise started experimenting with laptops after pounding a lot of caffeine. When the band really lets itself go the tracks are awesome, but the rest seems to melt into hella-like noodling. The reviews seem to be more about how these guys are forging into live-electronic territory rather than the music itself… I’m sure I will be more impressed when I see this live at pitchfork but until then I will keep pining for the next Lightning Bolt to appear.
I’ll have some funny stuff around about lunchtime… I know my posts have started to veer towards music lately. Which reminds me, who are all you people and what do you want to see here? We’ve had traffic increase enormously the last few months but we have no idea why. Drop us a comment and say hi :)
To cut down on the medical terms, I’ll simply state that my face looked like Sloth from Goonies for the last half week. I have photo proof, but the picture is far too hideous for public consumption. It literally looked like cartoon characters when they have toothaches, minus the poultice. The timing of all of this was horribly bad, as I had to miss a friend who was in town for the weekend only, not to mention my sister’s b-day dinner. Blah.
Anyhow, it’s time to put the scurvy outbreak aside and get back to the awesomeness, ye lubbers.
First off, the kid’s band Total Annihilation rocks so hard. Check out the stooges cover… and the names! I predict that Eddy Demon becomes the next Cheetah Chrome. Dorkmeister Harmoniak? Genius.
I think these folks may have some technical work to do to keep up with some foreign competition, though. It’s rather contrived, but those kids are soooo shredding in that Japan-is-trapped-in-time kind of way.
Ever wonder where all the dances in WoW came from? Now you know!
I’ve finally got my copy of the new Battles cd and will post some impressions later. This is probably my last post for today, but I’ll hopefully be keeping up with at least daily posts from now on. Yeaarrrrgh!
Well… it’s been a silent from me on the posting front for four days or so. What started as something akin to the flu has gotten complicated and morphed into a raging toothache. I’ve been up since 3am, and things hurt on a level usually equated only with torture, sudden injury, or post-op. Hopefully I can get some help today and actually get some work done. In the meantime, here’s a few things I’ve stumbled across:
The take-away shows are really great. One shot takes of indie bands of the moment live on the streets. What I’ve managed to watch so far has been wonderful.
Are you anyone’s favorite person? I identify with guy #2. My tendency is to melt into the background of wherever I am… always there, never the central focus. It’s all good.
Time-lapse map of the civil war infour minutes.
Anyhow, I’m going to see if I can sleep a few more hours before I start calling local dentists like crazy. I’m sure I’ll get this resolved this week, but who knows what it is going to take. Posts may be a bit sparse.
