Wooo I am off on vacationuntil Thursday. It’s a good feeling, but even though it’s the 4th I didn’t really know I had any time off until last week… so this will be a bit of a homebody vacation. Seeing as in the nextmonth orso I’ve got pitchfork, several random concerts, two visits from out of state friends, and a giant pile of work to do I should enjoy it while I can. Now that the pointless semi-personal anecdote is out of the way:
This break battle between two partially disabled guys is pretty sweet. Seeing as I’d break my arms trying half of that, who is really “disabled” here?
Hmmm, I went in to see the dentist to finish a root canal… it didn’t get finished but that doesn’t mean I didn’t have a grand old time. I think I’ll just earmark one day a week until the end of time for tooth torture. I’d say I’ll be glad when this month is over, but next month is typically one of the busiest of the year for me. Waaaaa
What can salvage a day like this? Totally insane dancing amvs!
New Gundam Show! Screw Neon Genesis, I like my angsty robot teen warrior with a bit more pop flair. Plus, in Gundam Wing that one kid threatened to kill a girl that invited him to her birthday party. At that anime age, I think it means he likes her despite her cooties.
As long as I’m being a pop japanophile spaz, I fully agree with tvinjapan’s hyping of this video by the double+ awesomely named band Plus-Tech Squeeze Box. It’s like Shibuya-kei on crack. Good stuff!
Also on point is Japanator with this great clip of the girl from the Polysics videos showing a motley crew of tv show celebs how to pull of her moves. Hard Gay is hilarious as always… he and Matsumoto put a lot of our comics to shame.
Today started off sucking without reservation, but a little bit of sun and a good kefta sangwich have sorted me right out. Bring on the afternoon!
Do you know what makes Tuesday a special day of the week? If you don’t know the answer, listen to more music. You’ll figure it out eventually.
This will make for a weird music post, but it’s hard to separate the mixture of things I’ve been seeing over the last week:
The New Pornographers first single My Rights Versus Yours off the so-close-to-out-it-hurts album “Challengers” is a great sign of what’s to come.
Along the same lines, the new Lauryn Hill track Lose Myself shows some promise. I just wish that booming production would just back off and let her take center stage, because she’s still sounding great. This track SCREAMS remix. Well, what can you expect for something off an animated feature soundtrack?
Actually, sometimes you can expect quite a bit: Yoko Kanno is my favorite anime soundtrack composer, and the soundtrack she did for the Cowboy Bebop was fantastic. Here is some footage of the The Seatbelts performing it live which absolutely burns through this stuff. Wow. Yoko’s enthusiasm quickly overcomes the “wtf” factor of that amazing red coat even without the music.
Usually, I hate it when sappy TV shows try to initiate some kind of fake hugfest around personal tragedies and disabilities, but Brian Gaynor blows away anything a scheming TV producer could dream up with this great dance number. I think it’s fantastic how he transforms his limited range of motion into a great personal style. Bravo!
Neutral Milk Hotel’s “In An Aeroplane Over The Sea” is probably my favorite album of all time. This photo montage of Anne Frank set to it is particularly powerful (warning: there’s nothing horrifically graphic but there are a few holocaust pictures included). Like the music, the effect is overall manically positive despite all odds.
Man, the last week has just plain sucked, but it’s cool now and the weekend is on the way. You know what that means… DANCING!
First off, my Dad sent me this. Anyone else have a dad that sends them breakin’ clips? I didn’t think so. That alone makes it awesome. That guy has got some crazy arm/core strength for a bigger guy.
I sent him this clip of Physicx from planet bboy in return. I really dig the Japanese love for hiphop and breakdancing. Unlike a lot of the mirroring of popular music that’s happened over there, I feel like it’s really a legit, genuine genre.
To cut down on the medical terms, I’ll simply state that my face looked like Sloth from Goonies for the last half week. I have photo proof, but the picture is far too hideous for public consumption. It literally looked like cartoon characters when they have toothaches, minus the poultice. The timing of all of this was horribly bad, as I had to miss a friend who was in town for the weekend only, not to mention my sister’s b-day dinner. Blah.
Anyhow, it’s time to put the scurvy outbreak aside and get back to the awesomeness, ye lubbers.
First off, the kid’s band Total Annihilation rocks so hard. Check out the stooges cover… and the names! I predict that Eddy Demon becomes the next Cheetah Chrome. Dorkmeister Harmoniak? Genius.
I think these folks may have some technical work to do to keep up with some foreign competition, though. It’s rather contrived, but those kids are soooo shredding in that Japan-is-trapped-in-time kind of way.
Ever wonder where all the dances in WoW came from? Now you know!
I’ve finally got my copy of the new Battles cd and will post some impressions later. This is probably my last post for today, but I’ll hopefully be keeping up with at least daily posts from now on. Yeaarrrrgh!
… because sometimes inspiration takes a little while to strike. Other times, it misses entirely. If anyone can think of something snappy that brings together the contents of the post below, I’ll retitle the post and credit you. Your (fake) name, viewed by TENS of surfers! Anyhow:
Baby vs. Cobra! No babies were harmed during the filming of this video. I think I am buying into the idea that there is a genetic basis to the experience of fear. Allegedly the snake’s mouth is sewn shut in this rite of passage for snake charmers in India. Not very PC, but once something reaches this level of crazy, I’m not sure animal cruelty should be the foremost topic.
B-boy battle, stereotypes vs. stereotypes! I’m not sure what point this skinny puppy video was trying to make, but the dancing is pretty good until things go all crunk. “Word.”
We have arrived unto the future, courtesy of Elektronik Supersonik. Offblast! This and Cosmonauty in a single week is almost too much to handle.
I have occasionally considered studying martial arts for fun and proft, and I think I’ve finally found what I’m looking for: GymKata! Thx monkeysforhelping, this is sooooo going on the netflix list.
It’s obviously a trick, but I found this video of a guy catching sunglasses on his face really funny for some reason I don’t even want to bother attempting to explain. I think the creators of this video would fully support this stance.
Another guy wearing sunglasses who is 100% for real is the awesome strobing/poplocking master flat top. Here’s more. Did this guy go to sleep every night cursing MC Hammer with his last breath? Anyhow, his leg/core strength and balance are amazing.
OK, if I’m going to have a song stuck in my head for a week without taking all of you down with me. While I am not as beguiled by the rest of the album yet, Feist’s My Moon My Man is definitely sexy ear candy. Plus the video has dancing, and Friday’s are all about dancing. At least after I’ve had my coffee… before that it’s more of a zombie skank maneuver.
